Mission Zero Coalition Reports

mission zero
The UK’s commitment to Net Zero by 2050 was signed into law in 2019. In 2021, the government published its Net Zero Strategy, setting a pathway to net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.  In 2022, it commissioned a review into its approach, to better understand the impact of the different ways to deliver its net zero pathway on the UK public and economy and maximise economic opportunities of the transition.

In January 2023 the Independent Review of Net Zero published their ‘Mission Zero’ report, led by the former Energy Minister and key driver behind the 2019 law, The Rt Hon Chris Skidmore OBE MP

This Mission Zero report recommended ten, 10-year missions that are integral to achieving net zero by 2025, and that should be committed to by the UK government to deliver on emissions reduction targets.

Mission Zero Coalition

Chris Skidmore launched the Mission Zero Coalition in March 2023 to build on the momentum from the Mission Zero report and provide a platform for an exchange of ideas on Net Zero policy development for the UK.

The Coalition brings together businesses, industry bodies and key stakeholders within ‘Mission Zero Networks’, based on the 10 missions deemed by the Independent Review to be critical to the UK meeting its net zero commitments.

Each Network aims to deliver further clarity and detail on what policy reform and change is needed to create the programmatic mission-based policies, frameworks and investments required to deliver and implement the UK’s net zero commitments.

Mission Zero Coalition Reports

The Mission Zero Coalition brings together businesses and organisations for a series of virtual and in-person roundtables, each chaired by Chris Skidmore. These discussions, supported by wider evidence gathering, form the basis of Network Reports, which set out recommendations on how to deliver on each of the 10 missions that have been recommended by the Net Zero Review.

Each report to looks at how the economic potential of decarbonisation can revolutionise our future, offering not just sustainability, but prosperity.

Mission Retrofit

The first of two reports that will focus specifically on decarbonising existing buildings, Decarbonising our built environment, as the Net Zero Review set out, remains one of the greatest challenges to Britain hitting Net Zero. It calls upon the Government to renew its focus on retrofitting buildings for energy efficiency, with a more ambitious target and more detailed plans to grow the necessary supply chains and skilled worker base.

The Future Is Local

With 85% of UK emissions being within the local sphere of influence, empowering greater local decision making must be central to UK climate action. This report includes practicable policy recommendations, following on from the Net Zero Review, to support this transition.
