Sustainable Building Services (SBS) was awarded this contract to deliver Energy Efficiency Improvement Works to 180 occupied properties on behalf of Broxtowe Council under the Efficiency East Midlands Framework. SBS accelerated the programme, providing the opportunity for the Client to apply for additional late-stage ECO2 funding. This enabled the scheme to be extended to a further 53 properties, despite a limited capital budget and scarcity of funding, enabling 233 homes in total to benefit from energy savings and greatly improved living conditions, backed by a 25-year SWIGA Guarantee.

To ensure rapid completions, close collaborative working from the outset with the Client and system designer PermaRock Products addressed early Planning Consent issues. One such issue was colour. The brickwork on existing properties had weathered and Planners were concerned that new, standard brick-effect render might look artificial and out of character.

The proposed finish comprised an architecturally sympathetic, brick-effect render, adapted using additional pigments to give it an 'aged' effect. To prove the viability of the approach, SBS and its supply chain partners produced samples and visualisations, which duly satisfied the Planning Department. Work was then able to proceed without delay or risk to funding.

A second challenge was the scattered distribution of properties, often in clusters of no more than 4 or 5 homes. This demanded effective stakeholder communication and scheduling, together with careful attention to issues such as access, resident communication and delivery of materials.

Property-by-property surveys enabled the manufacture of bespoke detailing in optimal factory conditions off-site, enhancing Quality Control and resulting in an easier, quicker installation process. The use of pre-cut insulation materials also speeded up the schedule.
